Hostel Hiring Happening

So you’ve read through the frequently asked questions, admired the photos, and thought "wow–this would be a great place to work"  Well, we here like to think so.  And we’re now hiring 1 or 2 seasonal hostel assistants.  The bad news is that unlike most hostels, we can’t provide housing for staff.  But the good news is you would get to work at one of the top-rated hostels in the country just across the street from the ocean and a few miles from the world’s tallest living things (and if you’re not from the area, we’ll certainly help you try to find a place nearby).

Here’s the scoop from our official post:

HI-Redwood National Park Hostel is a 30-bed hostel that has provided the North Coast with inexpensive lodging since 1987. It is located within Redwood National Park in the historic De Martin House, 13 miles south of Crescent City.

We are hiring 1-2 seasonal staff people to work 20-40 hours per week from April through October (note: if we find 2 great candidates, 1 can be for summer only–May or June through August/Sept.–so still apply if you’re only available those summer months). Occasional overnight stays are required. The starting wage is $9 per hour. Housing is not provided.

The ideal candidate has a thorough knowledge of Redwood National Park, Del Norte and/or Humboldt counties—or can quickly learn the region’s cultural and natural topography—and enjoys working with the public. As well, s/he can confidently handle a computerized reservation and cash register system, is creative and willing to help develop educational programs and other interpretive projects, and has a tolerance for cleaning. Prior hostelling experience and bilingual skills are recommended. We are willing to train if you are eager to learn.

Responsibilities:

-Take reservations by phone, e-mail and an online system

-Orient guests to the hostel and local area; assist in planning of day trips

-Become familiar with hostelling, its history and mission

-Collect and accurately record overnight fees and sales of goods

-Provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for guests

-Clean the hostel

-Help with special events, educational programs, maintenance work and other hostel projects

-Other duties as assigned by the Hostel Manager

Open for business

Once again we here at Redwood Hostel are back to working every day.  Yes, after the cold winter months of confusing hours (if it’s Monday, we must be closed–oh, unless it’s a holiday), we are now open seven days each week.  As of March 1, and continuing at least through October (we reserve the right come November or December to take a few days off), if it’s a day of the week, one or more of us will be here to welcome hostellers.

So let there be no mistake: we’re open.

(Of course, that doesn’t always mean we have openings.)
